2009 Braille Commemorative Images

The US Mint recently released coin images for the upcoming 2009 Louis Braille Commemorative Coin. This coin is currently sceduled to be released to the public on March 26, 2009. It may be issued in quantities of up to 400,000. Both proof and uncirculated versions of the coins will be issued.

2009-P Proof Louis Braille Silver Dollar

The designer of the obverse of the coin was Joel Iskowitz and the sculptor/engraver was Phebe Hemphill. It depicts a portrait of Louis Braille. The designer of the reverse of the coin was Susan Gamble and the sculptor/engraver was Joseph Menna. The reverse depicts a young child reading a Braille book and the Braille characters “BRL”. The characters are large enough so that they can be read by touch.
